A home was ‘struck by lightning’ as thunderstorms battered the Midlands. The severe weather also led to flooded roads and disrupted flights.
Emergency services were kept busy as the region was hit by torrential rain and strong winds. More than 50 weather-related 999 calls were made to the fire service overnight on Sunday, June 11.
Four crews raced to the scene of a fire in Dothshill, Tamworth, at 7.19pm, which was reportedly hit by a bolt of lightning. No one is believed to have been hurt or trapped as a result of the blaze, with the cause yet to be confirmed.
Heavy rainfall also led to flooding in Dudley Road, Kingswinford. A photograph – which can be viewed above – was posted online, urged motorists travelling by McDonald’s to “be careful as it’s completely flooded”.

Plane spotters also had an “interesting evening” watching aircrafts come into Birmingham Airport. One Twitter user said: “Lots of aircraft biding their time before landing into BHX. Some interesting tracks this evening as they avoid the storm front.”
Another added: “Interesting evening watching multiple flights circling at 10,000ft over South Shropshire on Flightradar24 as they try to wait out a huge thunder and lightening storm at Birmingham Airport. Never seen commercial airliners that low here before.”
Yellow weather warnings remain in place from noon until 9pm today (Monday, June 12). The Met Office predicts parts of the Black Country and beyond will face the brunt of the harsh weather from around 6pm.
Although not everyone is a fan of storms – particularly some pets – some weather watchers like to see Mother Nature in action. A dedicated site lightningmaps.org shows strikes as they happen.
