AS part of Men’s Health Week, a fundraiser is planned for the Bendigo Golf Club on Sunday 18 June with the aim of supporting prostate cancer research and treatment.
Men’s Health Week 2023 runs between 12 and 18 June and the golfing event will help round out the seven days of awareness.
Chair of the Bendigo Prostate Cancer Support Group, Neil Macdonald, said although a large part of the golf day is about the disease, it’s also aiming to bring awareness to all aspects of men’s wellbeing.
“It’s not just about prostate cancer,” said Mr Macdonald, “but also other things in men’s health such as mental health, which is big at the moment and needs awareness, you know, are you ok buddy?”
“It’s important that we get the message out there for guys to be tested, not just for their prostate-specific antigen reading, but also for them to have their sugar tested and their vitamin D and all those things, their cholesterol. Men’s health in general.”
The golf day will begin with an early lunch at 11am then a shotgun start for an 18-hole round from 12.15pm.
Following time on the links, there’ll be a barbecue and an auction and raffle, as well as prizes for the best-dressed individuals and teams, with the day having a retro theme.
Golfers will go in groups/teams of four and the entry fee is $75 per person or $300 per team.
Mr Macdonald said Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia sponsors will match the donations received during the event.
Last year the foundation raised more that $8 million by fundraising, with the money going towards prostate cancer research, treatment and support.
