The co-medalist teams both advanced through the first round of match play Monday in the 8th U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Kiawah Island Club’s Cassique course.
University of California-Berkeley teammates Aaron Du and Sampson Zheng and college freshmen Carter Loflin (University of Georgia) and Wells Williams (Vanderbilt University) moved into Tuesday’s Round of 16 as did the NHL referee Garrett Rank, of Canada, and Joseph Deraney, of Belden, Miss.
Rank refereed 73 regular-season NHL games this year and six first-round playoff contests.
The lone South Carolina representative to make it to match play, Matthew Doyle of Summerville, and his Elon University teammate Garrett Risner of Holly Springs, N.C., fell to Adam Miller of Phoenix and Mason Snyder of Las Vegas, 1-up.
Monday’s conditions were extremely windy with gusts to the upper 20s.
Du and Zheng, who beat Ryan Eckelkamp and Tony Gumper, 3 and 2, told USGA officials that the course played five to six shots harder than on Sunday when they posted a 61 in qualifying.
Loflin, of Duluth, Ga., and Williams, a West Point, Miss., eliminated brothers Matt and Paul Ostby, 6 and 4, to advance.
Two more rounds of match play will be played Tuesday, cutting the field to four teams who will participate in Wednesday’s semifinal and final.
