KINGSFORD — The Marquette boys raced to a Division 1 title with 134 points followed by Kingford with 114 and Sault Ste. Marie with 90 at the U.P. track finals in Kingsford Saturday.
The boys from Pickford took home the hardware in Division 2 with 151 points followed by Manistique and Ishpeming with 87.
The Munising boys won the Division 3 title with 103.5 points followed by Newberry with 81 and Bessemer had 52.
Pickford’s David Kozisek got a win in the long jump with a jump of 20-10 and also won the high jump with a jump of 6-03. “It felt good out here for me I love this weather I wasn’t able to break the record but at least I came away with win,” Kozisek said. Kozisek also picked up wins in the 110 meter and 300 metere hurdle events.
Owen Lester of St. Ignace was the winner in the pole vault with a with a 10-06 vault. “It felt great it was a little hot out but nothing I couldn’t handle, I won the event last year so it was nice to get the repeat this year,” Lester said.
Ishpeming’s Brayden Martin won the discus event with a throw of 136-01 and came in fourth in the shot put with a throw of 40-10. “It felt great I was a half inch off the school record but a U.P. Finals win is a great moment for me and something i will always enjoy looking back on,” Martin said.
Menominee’s Darrent Butler won the high jump at this years U.P. Finals in division one as a freshman with a jump of 5-10. “It felt great out here today to win the high jump at U.P. Finals as a freshman it’s so rewarding and I know I couldn’t have done it without my coach Brent Nerat who pushes me to succeed, this is a gerat moment for me,” Butler said.
Iron Mountain’s Will Fairchild took wins in the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles in tough races against Gladstone’s Luke Bracket with the 300 meter won by one thousandth of a second “It was a great day out very special to get a U.P. Finals win Luke is a great racer just great races today,” Fairchild said. Bracket had been on a roll going into the finals but coming away second is still a good performance. “It was hot out today staying cool and hydrated is key in events in these temperatures, Bracket said.
Wyatt Demers of Manistique won the 100 meter dash in Division 3 and came in second in the 200 meter and 4×200 relay events. “It felt good hot out drinking fluids staying hydrated super important on days like this,” Demers said.
Kevin Kytta of Chassell won the 3200 meter run in Division 3 with a time of 10:32.70 and came in third in the 1600 meter event. “I was happy the sun went behind the clouds and cooled down definitely made it better for the event, I love track and its great to come out and compete to win e these events,” Kytta said.
Micheal Floriano had a good day for Kingsford winning the 100 meter and 4×200 meter relay events and took second in the 200 meter and 4×100 meter relay events. “It felt good had a nice tail wind that always helps ,” Floriano said.
The boys teams from the U.P. saw 37 schools score points in today’s meet, and defiantly a great day for Marquette and Pickford whose coaches were pleased with the event. “It’s great to see all the kids out here compete they all work hard and it was just a wonderful day for them i’m so proud of them ,” said Marquette coach Derek Marr. “We won last year in division three and to win again after moving up to division two is very awesome for the kids,” said Pickford coach Garde Kangas a graduate from Manistique.
