Even though it’s been a month since the Oscars aired, the conversation surrounding the event hasn’t died down. All of this is due to the ongoing drama surrounding Will Smith’s beat by Chris Rock on national television, which led to him becoming one banned from the ceremony for a decade. And Marlon Wayans recently revealed the advice he gave Smith after the split, and his honest thoughts on Jada Pinkett from it all.
Marlon Wayans and Will Smith have a personal relationship, and have recently bonded over theirs the quest to get back into shape after rocking dad bods. During a recent appearance on Big Boy TV, Wayans revealed the interactions he’s had with both Smith and Chris Rock since the Oscars took place. He began to talk about the advice he gave to King Richard actor and said:
I was like, ‘Hey bro, I might want to go get you about three hours of therapy. 15 hours this week, you have to sit down with a therapist and have a long talk. There is something going on with you. And it wasn’t him. Look, I don’t have that kind of pressure. He’s been Black excellence for 30 years, I’ve been Black allrightness, it’s not too much pressure. People expect me to do stupid things, but him? No, not Will.
Well, there you have it. Therapy is a great tool that more and more people have been using lately to take care of their mental health. And it looks like that was the recommendation Marlon Wayans gave Will Smith in response to the slam. Therapy, and lots of it.
Ultimately, it’s unclear how Will Smith is privately taking care of his mental health as the fallout from his Academy Awards continues to play out. He recently made headlines to travel to India for a meditation retreat, so it seems that he is trying to find the silence in the midst of the noise. He and Chris Rock have apparently not had a private conversation about the incident Smith published an apology on social media.
Later in the same interview, Marlon Wayans also revealed that he contacted Chris Rock about the bang. The two share a bond as friends and comics, so this reaction makes a lot of sense. As white girls actor shared:
I looked Chris up, asked if he was ok. They are both my friends, I know them both. It’s like watching my brothers fight. It’s not a fight you want to see. There is no victory in that.
For his part, Chris Rock is in the middle of a comedy tour, which seems to be selling well in the wake of the bang. He has made quick references to the eventalthough it is not part of his current set in any significant way.
Marlon Wayans also addressed the reason Will Smith beat Chris Rock at the Oscars: a comic joke made about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. While the recent Oscar winner seemingly defended his wife, Wayans seems to think it did the opposite of keeping her name out of people’s mouths. As he shared:
I talk a little bit about it in my set. I won’t go all the way there, but I think that by trying to take your name out of one person’s mouth, you are now putting your wife’s name in everyone’s mouth. Comedians are terrorists… [Now] everyone got a Will Smith-Chris Rock, you know, Sure joke.
Points were made. The conversation surrounding the bang has not subsided in the past month, and it will remain fodder for comedians for the foreseeable future. While Chris Rock may never make a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, others certainly will.
Marlon Wayans next movie is titled Boo, and is expected to hit theaters sometime this year. In the meantime, check it out 2022 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
