A man who punched an innocent victim inside of a bathroom at Westfield Geelong was also involved in a tussle which resulted in a man receiving a 15cm laceration.
Dylon Lynch, 19, pleaded guilty to recklessly causing injury, theft and resisting police.
Police said Lynch kicked the door of a cubicle inside of a bathroom in Westfield at 10.15am on April 23 as a man was relieving himself.
After the incident, the victim washed his hands and asked why Lynch was kicking the door in and said “what are you doing mate?”.
In response, Lynch punched the man in the face, causing his lip to split.
The victim then left the bathroom and asked a cleaning lady to call the police.
CCTV footage captured Lynch drinking whisky and at 10.30am, he was seen entering the Myer store in Geelong where he smashed a bottle of perfume.
About 10 minutes later, Lynch walked into Market Square and took a utility knife without making any attempt to pay.
The court heard police attended Market Square and placed him under arrest for assault.
During the arrest he resisted police which resulted in an injury to a police officer’s leg, while a security guard received a 15 cm laceration which resulted in surgery.
The court heard the injuries were caused by the knives hidden in Lynch’s pants.
Lynch’s lawyer said his client had not been charged in relation to the injuries to the police officer and security guard as they happened by accident.
Magistrate Ann McGarvie described the offending as “totally inexplicable”.
“It’s bewildering as to why you kicked in the toilet door and punched the victim. That is what concerns me the most,” Ms Mcgarvie said.
Lynch will be sentenced on May 30.
