A MAN has been being jailed after he admitted assaulting a child in Rugby.
Lewis Romanis, of Beeches Road, Birmingham was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison when he appeared at Warwick Crown Court.
The 23 year-old will be made to serve at least 18 months of his sentence before being released on licence.
He had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting/ill-treating/neglecting/abandoning a child/young person to cause unnecessary suffering/injury.
Maisy Russell, 22, of Buchanan Road, Rugby, admitted child neglect at the same court and was handed a community order and 80 hours of unpaid work.
It comes after concerns were raised for a young boy who was taken to hospital with severe bruising and head injuries. The offences took place at a property in Rugby in 2019.
A difficult investigation began involving the CID team at Rugby, which resulted in Romanis and Russell being arrested and subsequently charged.
Det Con Beverley Ward said: “Any concerns raised to us about the welfare of any child will always be investigated by officers.
“We have specialist teams dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable children who cannot speak up for themselves and securing justice for any child in a similar situation.
“Romanis admitted his guilt in the treatment of an innocent child, and he has been rightly punished for his actions.
“Thankfully these cases are extremely rare, but nonetheless, it has taken a meticulous and lengthy police investigation to establish what happened and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved.
“I would also like to add that the young boy has not suffered any long-term issues and is surrounded by a very loving and supportive family.”
