A 24-year-old Hope Island man was arrested in Maroochydore on Thursday afternoon and charged with unlawful striking causing death.
He will face Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday.
Hayes, also from Hope Island, had been dining with friends when he walked outside the restaurant about 9.20pm.
Hayes was seen talking to a man who is alleged to have “delivered one blow” to his face, Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said earlier in the week.
There was “nothing overtly aggressive about the conversation” until Hayes was felled by the front-on blow, Ahearn said.
