A 23-year-old man has been charged after a “terrifying” row broke out among spectators at a league game, where a woman’s car was allegedly smashed up while she was still inside.
Police in Mount Isa were called to a disturbance at Alec Inch Oval in Healy about 9pm on Saturday, May 26.
Witnesses said two groups of spectators got into an argument during the game, which boiled over into the car park where a vehicle was targeted, and a male allegedly smashed the windscreen in while a man and woman were inside.
Police said upon arrival, officers observed a vehicle that had sustained damage, and a number of people had left the scene in a silver Toyota HiLux.
Following investigations, police located the vehicle and subsequently arrested a 23-year-old man without further incident.
The 23-year-old Sunset man has been charged with one count of wilful damage and is expected to appear at Mount Isa Magistrates Court on June 19.
Police said no one was physically injured as a result of the incident.
Investigations are continuing.
Mount Isa woman Toots Tuteru said the damaged vehicle belonged to her 18-year-old daughter.
Ms Tuteru said a heated exchange of words in the crowd during the game that escalated afterwards in the carpark.
She claimed her daughter’s tyres were slashed, and when her daughter and partner got into the vehicle, the car was surrounded by a group of males.
One male allegedly jumped on the bonnet and kicked and smashed the windscreen while the people inside the car were being threatened, Ms Tuteru claimed.
