A man was hospitalized Saturday night following a
two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Horsham Road and the 202 Parkway in
Montgomery Township.
The crash occurred at 10:38 p.m. on June 10 and involved a
GMC Yukon and a Toyota Corolla, according to Montgomery Township Police Lt.
Gerry Dougherty. The GMC was traveling westbound on Horsham Road when it
attempted to make a left onto the southbound lane of the 202 Parkway and struck
the Toyota head-on as it was traveling eastbound on Horsham Road.
“After the initial impact, the Toyota then struck a traffic
pole on the southeast corner of the intersection where it came to rest,” Dougherty
said. “The GMC Yukon spun counterclockwise after the initial impact and
came to rest directly behind the Toyota.”
An unidentified male who was driving the Toyota became
trapped in his vehicle as a result of the crash, prompting a rescue dispatch
for the Fire Department of Montgomery Township (FDMT) and several other area
fire companies. Crews worked for approximately 20 minutes to rescue the man,
who was successfully extricated at 10:57 p.m., according FDMT Director of Fire
Services Bill Wiegman.
Once freed, the man was airlifted via JeffSTAT2 to Jefferson
University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he is currently listed in critical
but stable condition, police said. The other driver was uninjured.
As a result of the crash, the intersection was closed for
approximately four hours, Dougherty said.
Montgomery Township Police were assisted at the scene by
units from the Lower Gwynedd Police Department, Fire Department of Montgomery
Township, Colmar Fire Company, North Penn Fire Company, and Volunteer Medical
Service Corps of Lansdale, along with fire police from Colmar, North Penn,
Fairmount, Centre Square, Hatboro, Horsham, Wissahickon, and Chalfont fire
companies.
The crash remains under investigation, and police said any
charges being filed will take place as the investigation progresses. Anyone who
may have witnessed the crash or otherwise has information about the incident is
asked to contact the Montgomery Township Police Department’s Highway Safety
Unit at 215-362-2301.
