A Sydney property investment company has applied for a planning permit for four glasshouses and a packing shed on 35 hectares at the corner of Curr Rd and the highway.
The business could employ more than 100 people, depending on seasonal variations.
The business is expected to be operated by a Griffith registered company, Ttalynhub, which is endeavouring to establish a network of intensive greenhouse facilities across Australia.
The Tongala property is owned by Sydney company, R F Corval VA Pty Ltd, and is currently occupied by a dairy farm.
The packing shed to be built on-site is expected to be 170 metres long and 44 metres wide.
The application noted that greenhouse production allowed the grower to ensure consistency of both production volume and quality.
“High tech greenhouse enable growers to control their growing environment in so optimising their production potential and significantly reducing use of water, pesticides, fungicides and environmental impacts,” the application said.
If the project goes ahead it would join two other major greenhouse developments for the Goulburn Valley — Flavorite near Mooroopna on the Midland Hwy and Katunga Fresh.
The directors of Ttalynhub are Johannes Geurtsen from Karingal, NSW and Henry Bosman from Maitland Vale, NSW. Secretary is Graham Foley from Griffith, NSW.
Campaspe Shire Council is currently considering the planning application.
