Western Sydney MC Vv Pete’s only dropped a handful of singles so far (plus a sweltering Mall Grab remix of her 2022 single ‘Frauds’), but it doesn’t take a genius to see she’s on a path to stardom.
She’s formed an all-star partnership with Sydney-based producer Utility, and she’s just released her scorching new single ‘Jordan 1s’. If you’re not feeling more confident after listening to a Vv Pete songs, then try again. She’s making music that’ll get you ready to take on the world.
Of course, all the confidence in the world doesn’t completely quash self-doubt. As Vv tells us, she’s a fan of the quote “fake it till you make it”. Wise words to live by. This edition of Sucks is full of Vv’s wisdom, especially when it comes to trying to help people grow.
Despite her commentary involving Cancer star signs — don’t come at us if you’re a Cancer — she’s absolutely right. It might suck when you’re not able to help someone change for the better, but they need to want to help themselves before change can happen.
Junkee: A mistake that turned into an opportunity?
Around the age of 19, I was seeking producers and labels to work with. A lot reached out to me but didn’t prioritise me and it was starting to affect my mental health. I would overthink my future and wonder why nobody wanted to prioritise my work when I know I’m damn well talented — until I met Trackwork, the label I’m currently signed to. They understood me, the label prioritised my work and together we implemented a great work ethic and plan on [making] a global impact.
Cringe quote you used to live by?
“Fake it till you make it”.
Worst advice you got and blindly followed?
“Be nice and stay humble”. Sometimes when you’re too nice to people, you get taken advantage of, and I’m not here for it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sweet girl – but if you push me, I explode.
The worst failure you’re up for sharing, and what you learned from it?
During my adolescent stage, I surrounded myself with low vibrational friends, who were always jealous and envious of my confidence. When I finished high school I reflected on who was suitable to hang around me and I cut off the fakes. After a while, I realised I am elevating and blessings occurred on the daily.
Anything you used to be wrong about?
Thinking I could change someone for the good, but not realising the person did not want to make a change.
Embarrassing internet habit?
Tagging friends and laughing at posts that aren’t meant to be funny.
Ideal morning routine versus actual morning routine?
I should be up by 7am but I wake up around 10am, but that’s because I go to bed late.
Something very off-brand for you?
I laugh at the worst moments when I’m not supposed to, which is quite bad – when my friends and I are placed in the same room. For example, if someone trips over on the floor, I’ll definitely help the person get up and then I’ll start screaming with laughter after.
Bad health decision?
I tend to attract toxic star signs like Cancers. I tend to tell myself “it’s okay, you can help change them,” but forget that you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to make a change.
What do you waste money on?
Jewellery.
Worst procrastination habit?
Pulling up late to events. We call it “African timing”. It’s pretty bad — no matter how much you try, you’re never on time — but I am on time for my shows!
