The highly-anticipated new film collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and veteran director Martin Scorsese did not disappoint at the Cannes Film Festival 2023 in France. The film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” received a nine-minute standing ovation following its three-hour premiere, as reported by Variety.
Scorsese took the opportunity to thank the crowd for their warm reception, saying, “We shot this a couple of years ago in Oklahoma. It’s taken its time to come around, but Apple did so great by us. There was lots of grass. I’m a New Yorker. I was very surprised. This was an amazing experience. We lived in that world.”
Robert De Niro, who also stars in the film, was present at the premiere. It marks his 11th time working with Scorsese on a feature.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” is based on David Grann’s 2017 book, “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.” The film is set in 1920s Oklahoma and centers around the serial killings of members of the Osage Nation, who became wealthy due to the vast amount of oil discovered on their land. The crimes were later referred to as the “Reign of Terror.”
DiCaprio plays Ernest, the nephew of a powerful local rancher (played by De Niro), and Lily Gladstone plays Ernest’s wife Mollie. The film also features Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion, William Belleau, Louis Cancelmi, Tatanka Means, Michael Abbott Jr., Pat Healy, Scott Shepherd, Jason Isbell, and Sturgill Simpson.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” is co-written and produced by Scorsese and screenwriter Eric Roth, with DiCaprio listed as an executive producer. The film premieres exclusively in select theaters on October 6 before opening up on October 20. It will eventually be available on Apple TV+ to stream globally.
Just a few days prior to its premiere, Apple Original Films released the first official teaser trailer for the film. The trailer showcases “an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal,” according to an official synopsis.
