Forecasters suspect rain will hit Leicester some time on Sunday evening as violent storms sweep across the UK. Scattered showers have affected the Midlands throughout today (Saturday) but there have been blue skies (so far) in the city.
The Met Office currently reckons there is a 70 per cent chance that thunderstorms will hit the city by 6pm on Sunday after a dry Saturday. There are yellow weather warnings in force for both today and tomorrow, issued by the Met Office.
Leicester is only on the very edge of today’s yellow warning area, which only stretches east as far as Oakham in this area. But the similar warning for Sunday covers a bigger area, stretching all the way past Peterborough and nearly to Wisbech in Norfolk, and the chances of a downpour are higher.

The storms are likely to hit some areas and miss others, however, so the city could still avoid any wet weather at all. The Met Office warning for Sunday states: “While some places will be largely dry, thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are likely to develop in places on Sunday afternoon.
“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”
The BBC weather forecast predicts a chance of thunderstorms in Leicester from about 4pm on Sunday, although the chance of storms – according to The BBC Weather Centre analysis – never reaches more than 58 per cent for Leicester.
