- Laptop caught fire at school at Oxenford on Gold Coast, Qld
- Two taken to Gold Coast Hospital as precautionary measure
Two people have been hospitalised after a laptop battery caught on fire at a school in Oxenford on the Gold Coast.
Paramedics rushed to the scene at Gaven State School shortly after 1pm on Friday when they were alerted to a fire.
Up to 20 children were assessed by emergency services at the Universal St address.
Two patients were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition as a ‘precautionary measure, according to a Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman.
The school’s principal, Phillip Carleton, provided an update for members of the school community on the Gaven State School Facebook page on Friday afternoon.
‘At 12:30pm today one of our year 6 students cut up what we believe to be some sort of battery which in turn started smoking,’ Mr Carleton posted.
‘As a result all students and staff in the school were evacuated to the oval. The battery was removed from the classroom and the rooms were ventilated.
‘Year 6 students have not been allowed back in their block and are spending the afternoon in the hall as a precaution. The ambulance and fire brigade are in attendance and are checking all students and staff who were exposed to the smoke.
‘There is no cause for concern at this time. All measures are precautionary.’
