Lansford Borough Council took another step last week toward building a new borough garage.
The borough is advertising for bids for site preparation for a proposed garage on Dock Street. The borough has a state grant of $160,000 to put toward the garage.
Council President Bruce Markovich said this is a partial grant toward the cost of the new garage, which was estimated at about $1 million.
The borough plans to use funds it receives from leasing out buildings on the former Silberline property to pay for the balance, Markovich said after the meeting.
The borough receives about $50,000 a year from the leases, he said.
In other business, council:
• Approved a special event form from Friends of Lansford Recreation for PlantFest from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 26.
• Will be looking into prices on security cameras for borough properties, including the pool.
• Rescinded an ordinance vacating a portion of Tunnel Street.
• Passed a resolution opposing use of sewer sludge as fertilizer, which was brought to council by the nonprofit Save Carbon County last month. Other communities have adopted the measure seeking changes in state regulations.
• Passed a resolution transferring a Nationwide life insurance policy from the borough to the former police chief, Jack Soberick. Markovich said the borough allows retiring officers to purchase their insurance policies.
• Hired part-time streets worker, Dennis Anderson. Five people were interviewed, Councilman Bill Chuma said.
• Tabled action for further discussion on changing bus stops for the Panther Valley School District.
