CHAMBERSBURG — The Mid-Penn Conference takes in portions of the PIAA’s District 6 and District 3. It is equivalent to other major conferences in Pennsylvania like the WPIAL in Pittsburgh (District 7) and the Philadelphia Catholic League (District 12).
Despite State College and Altoona, powerhouse teams from District 6. just sending limited squads, the competition was fierce. The Mifflin County boys scored just 12 points and were 18th out of 25 teams, while the Mifflin County girls were shutout and were last out of 30 teams.
“When we come to the Mid-Penn Conference meet, we know that many of the participants will be competing at the state level in a couple of weeks. We were prepared to do our best,” said Tamara Sechler, Mifflin County’s head track coach.
Mifflin County got off to a good start as it picked up points in the first running event of the day, the 4×800 meter relay. The team of Caden Bell, Isaac Parkes-Gill, Tylor Druckenmiller and Carter Smith turned in a time of 8:16, which was good enough for sixth place. The winning team came from Cumberland Valley with a time of 7:59.87.
In the field events, Mifflin County got a fourth place finish in the triple jump from Jayden King, who had a jump of 44.075 feet. The winning jump came from JJ Kelly of Chambersburg, who had a mark of 46.7. As a freshman last year, Kelly was the state champion in this event.
Mifflin County’s remaining points came from Myka Simmons, who was fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.54.1. The winning time came from Lex Cyrus of Susquehanna Township, 21.76.
One Mifflin County performer did not participate was Josiah Sechler, who is the defending AAA state champion in the javelin. Sechler is expected back in action this week as the District 6 AAA meet gets under way on Wednesday.
Chambersburg ran away with the team title as it scored 103 points, with Central Dauphin second at 60.
Kelly was one of the stars as the sophomore won the triple jump, high jump and was on the winning 4×100 relay team. He also was second in the long jump.
Hershey came from behind to win the girls title. Hershey scored 19 points in the next to last running event, the 3200-meter run. The Hershey girls went 1-2 and then picked a point for the eighth spot. That eighth-place finish proved to be the difference as Hershey edged Cumberland Valley, 70-69.
