BISMARCK — The Kindred Vikings boys are North Dakota Class B state champions in track and field for the fourth season in a row as they took home the title Saturday afternoon at the state track and field meet at MDU Resources Community Bowl.
On the girls side, Central Cass tied Central McLean for championship with 46 points ahead of third place New Rockford-Sheyenne.
A well-rounded team helped secure the Kindred’s boys win with 124 points. Bowman County was second with 101.
“We’re really excited and we’re really proud of our kids,” said Kindred coach Josh Allmaras. “They had such a great weekend. We were really well-balanced throughout the weekend.”
Kindred throwers collected 42 points in the three-day meet. The sprinters score 13 points, the relays 19 and the distance runners collected what points they could against the long distance powerhouse Bowman County.
While the tie isn’t exactly how the Squirrels girls envisioned defending the state title, the win is still a big accomplishment said coach Alex Kingsley.
“We’re a little bummed (to tie) but we’re still happy,” said Kingsley. “It’s a good performance and everyone worked hard. With the hot days, it was a grind and we knew it was going to be a grind. The team stepped up and performed well.”
The day started off well for the Vikings as Trey Heinrich earned the 300 meter hurdles championship in 39.97 seconds. He followed that up later with another win in the 110 meter hurdles, narrowly missing the state record with a time of 14.55.
“It feels really good,” Heinrich said. “I wasn’t able to compete last year and I always wanted to come and be state champion, especially in the 110. That’s my favorite event.”
Kindred also took wins in the boys 4×100 relay in 43.65. The team of Charlie Biewer, Xander Rath, Cam Schwartzwalter and Masen Allmaras tied the state record in the event in their prelim Friday in 43.62.
On the girls side, Elise Wisnewski took another state title in the 100 meter dash in 12.05, just five-hundredths of a second slower than the state record she set in her prelim on Friday.
Wisnewski approached the 100 final as she had her other races over the weekend.
“It felt good. Like I’ve said before, I just tried to stay relaxed,” Wisnewski said. “Since it was finals I knew there’d be more competition but it felt good to get another title.”
With her teammates Decontee Smith, Grace Lemar and Mayzee Jacobsen, Wisnewski also contributed to a state title in the 4×100 relay in 48.86. The group also broke the state record in their Friday prelim in 48.50.
Wisnewski finished second to New Rockford-Sheyenne’s Kelsie Belquist — who won titles in all four she was in contention for Saturday — in the 200 meter dash.
Belquist also set multiple state records during the tournament following a comeback win from a fall in her 300 hurdle prelim Friday. The fall, Belquist said, provided some extra fuel to her fire to compete this weekend.
“Coming into the meet with that fall in the hurdles, I think it just pushed me even more to accomplish all the things I have,” Belquist said.
Belquist also won in the 300 hurdles (41.48), 100 hurdles (14.36), and 400 meter dash (56.56), setting new records in the 300 hurdles in the final and 400 dash in her prelim.
Other boys’ winners in running events Saturday included Shiloh Christian’s Avery Harms in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Hillsboro-Central Valley in the 4×200 meter relay, Carrington’s Logan Weninger in the 400 meter dash, Bowman County’s Taylor Wanner in the 800 meter run and Hillsboro-Central Valley in the 4×400 relay.
For the girls, running event champions included Bowman County in the 4×200 meter relay and Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis and Clarks’ Brynn Hanson in the 800 meter run.
In field events, DLB’s Jaylin Fulin-Ross won the boys triple jump while Kidder County’s Kennedy Harter won the girls event.
In the javelin, Ellendale’s Levi Reis took the state title while Central McLean’s Daisy Sparrow won the girls title.
