Class 5A Region I
Mansfield Summit 55, Amarillo 48
The third time was the charm at Mansfield Summit Friday afternoon.
After being eliminated by Amarillo High late in the season each of the previous two years, Summit cleared a major hurdle in the Region I-5A semifinals. The Jaguars took control of the game midway through the third quarter and held on to beat Amarillo 55-48 at Kay Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls.
Summit (30-5) will play in the region championship game at noon Saturday for the right to go to the state tournament in San Antonio next week.
It was as competitive a game as could be expected between the No. 11 Jaguars and No. 7 Amarillo. Neither team led by double digits and both started hot from beyond the 3-point line, as threes accounted for all the points in the first quarter, with Amarillo (33-5) taking an 18-12 lead.
The Sandies led by as many as nine points in the second quarter, but Summit chipped away to cut it to 25-21 at halftime.
Summit’s athleticism took over in the second half. The game was tied at 38 at the end of the quarter, and the Jaguars took over with the score tied at 43 midway through the fourth quarter. Franck Emmou hit a 3-pointer to start a 7-0 run that gave the Jaguars a 50-43 lead, and Amarillo never got closer than four points the rest of the way.
Richard Lemboye had a game-high 15 points for Summit, with 11 of them coming in the second half. Zach Brown led Amarillo with 13.

El Paso Chapin 69, Fort Worth OD Wyatt 68
Fort Worth OD Wyatt’s quest for a state title ended in dramatic fashion Friday night at Kay Yeager Coliseum in the Region 1-5A boys basketball semifinals.
Chaparrals guard D’Adrian Thomas’ missed layup at the buzzer gave El Paso Chapin a 69-68 double-overtime victory in a matchup of state-ranked teams.
The Huskies (30-6) advance to Saturday’s Region 1-5A title game against Mansfield Summit at noon. OD Wyatt’s season ends with a 20-11 record. The Chaparrals lost their first game since Dec. 29. OD Wyatt is ranked No. 9 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Chapin is ranked No. 18.
Chapin’s Brandon Hymes scored the game-winner with 11.1 seconds left and scored six of the team’s seven points in the overtime period. He finished with 13 points.
The Chaparrals got 28 points from Myles Rigby and 13 points from Nicholas Gunter. Bryson Goldsmith led Chapin with 26 points.

Class 5A Region II
Kimball 69, Red Oak 44
GARLAND — Red Oak hung tight with Kimball as long as it could. But at one point, the gap between the No. 12 and No. 1 teams in the state became apparent.
The state’s top 5A team Kimball (30-2) defeated Red Oak (27-10) 69-44 in the 5A Region II semifinals Friday night behind a deadly second quarter that created a 22-point halftime deficit that Red Oak could never come from away from .
Despite being tied 7-7 with Red Oak trailing just 13-9 after the first quarter, the tide turned in Kimball’s favor early in the second as Kimball went on a 25-5 run. During that run, senior forward RJ Osborne hit four threes in a row. He finished with a game-high 23 points.
“He shot the ball,” Kimball coach Nick Smith said. “His last two playoff games weren’t what he wanted and he didn’t think he was playing well and I told him there are other things you can do — play defense, rebound. He did it at both ends of the field. I’m so proud of him.”
Kimball also suffocated Red Oak defensively, consistently switching defenses. Smith said that’s what Red Oak did when his team narrowly beat them 73-70 in December, and he wanted to give them a taste of their own medicine.
DaCannon Wickware added 17 points and Tylar Hankamer had 16 for Kimball. Perico Smith led Red Oak with 13.

Lancaster 48, Frisco Memorial 43 (OT)
GARLAND — Lancaster’s philosophy was simple: control the tempo of the game and explode when the time comes.
That’s exactly what it did Friday night, as it avoided an upset bid by Frisco Memorial (20-17) and came away with a 48-43 overtime victory.
Depending on when you were watching, it could seem like two different Lancaster teams were on the floor. Sometimes the post players would fly and catch alley-oops that brought the house down. In the second moment, the 90-second clock burned without moving the ball.
“I told our guys we just have to be patient, and not rush it,” Lancaster coach Ferrin Douglas said.
With regulation tied 39-39, the final four minutes would come down to who could control the clock better.
And Lancaster (25-7) came out on top.
“We’ve been in these situations all year,” Douglas said. – We have had many matches like this. We just believe we can win.”
Frisco Memorial, which narrowly missed the playoffs as the fourth seed in District 10-5A, challenged the state’s No. 5 team from the start. The effort was led by Leon Horner, who finished with a team-high 16 points, including seven in the fourth quarter.
But Memorial had no answer for Lancaster’s Dillon Battie, who led all scorers with 21 points, including six in overtime. He accounted for one of two dunks in the final minute of overtime that sealed the game. However, it was Joseph Mayberry’s charge just before that put Lancaster in control in the final moments of the contest.
Lancaster advances to tomorrow’s Region II final against Kimball, setting up a clash between two of the state’s top-five teams. That match will tip at noon.
