So, for Ross County to manage a reprieve from the relegation play-off spot they must win, pure and simple.
A win moves them level on points with today’s hosts and they’re currently sitting with a superior goal difference, -21 to Killie’s -27.
A draw or defeat, as aforementioned, is quite frankly useless to the Staggies this afternoon.
There is a more dire outcome than simple drawing or losing for them, though.
Should all-but-automatically-relegated Dundee United pull off a shock win away to Motherwell, and County take a beating in Ayrshire, with both results resulting in an eight-goal swing, then Ross County would take the automatic route out of the top-flight.
Malky Mackay’s side currently are on the previously stated -21 goal difference, with Dundee United on -29. So, if that unlikely confluence of results occurs and the footballing gods conspire to write another fascinating twist in this Scottish Premiership season, Ross County would go down automatically and Dundee United would — somehow — manage to secure the play-off spot.
If Dundee United win but no eight-goal swing occurs, draw, or lose, it’s a straight drop to the Scottish Championship for the Tannadice club.
Got it? Good. Let the drama commence…soon.
