The region’s school holidays are about to get a whole lot more exciting and active with basketball, golf, AFL, pickleball and more on offer as part of the upcoming Skills and Drills event.
The free, half-day extravaganza is organised by local sporting clubs and the Bundaberg Regional Council as part of the Eat, Breathe, Move program.
Sport and Recreational portfolio spokesperson Cr Vince Habermann said it promised to be a fun-filled opportunity for primary school-aged children to sharpen their skills and explore various sports and physical activities.
“Skills and Drills offers an opportunity for children to engage in a wide range of sports and physical activities in a vibrant and active environment,” he said.
“We are thrilled to bring this event to our community and provide an avenue for children to discover and enjoy different sports.”
Skills and Drills will be held on various dates and locations throughout the region, catering to children’s interests and accessibility.
Here are the details:
- Gin Gin: Wednesday, June 28, 2023, from 9 am to noon at Gin Gin State School
- Childers: Tuesday, July 4, 2023, from 9 am to noon at Childers State School.
- Bundaberg: Wednesday, July 5, 2023, from 9 am to noon at Shalom College Bundaberg.
During these session, children will have the chance to participate in a diverse range of sports, including AFL, pickball/tennis, basketball, golf and more.
Each sport station will provide engaging activities and guidance to enhance the children’s skills and foster their love for physical activity.
Cr Habermann said in an exciting addition to the event, Paralympic gold medallist Chantel Wolfenden would be present to share her inspiring journey and engage in a talk and question time session before the Bundaberg Skills and Drills activities commence.
The swimmer has won a gold, silver and four bronze medals throughout her career, competing in the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games.
“Chantel’s presence is sure to inspire young athletes and encourage them to pursue their sporting dreams,” Cr Habermann said.
“Parents and guardians are encouraged to mark these dates in their calendars, as the Skills and Drills event promises to be an unmissable opportunity for their children to enjoy an active and fun-filled school holiday experience.
“With sports, skills, and a touch of inspiration, this event is set to make a lasting impact on the region’s young athletes-in-the-making.”
The Skills and Drills event falls under the Eat, Breathe, Move initiative, which is spearheaded by the Building a Healthy Bundaberg Alliance and its supporting members.
This project has received funding from the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport, and Health and Wellbeing Queensland through Round 2 of the ActiveKIT program.
