Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele has no interest in representing Scotland, Steve Clarke has revealed.
It was reported back in March that the national team were considering an approach for the English stopper who qualifies to play for the Tartan Army after he established himself as the Seagulls number one, and showed some fine form in the top-flight down south. Norwich stopper Angus Gunn was persuaded to switch allegiance and Steele was seen as another who could provide quality between the sticks.
However, it would seem that the 32-year-old has intimated he is not interested in switching. Steele played for England all the way through to under-21s and also played for the Great Britain side at the Olympics but hasn’t had a look in for Gareth Southgate’s side.
Clarke has not spoken to the former Middlesbrough and Sunderland man directly but it appears a third party passed the message on.
The Scotland boss said: “My understanding is no. That’s through someone else.
“It’s not quite as straightforward as Jason is Scottish.
“I have spoken about it, but at the moment, for me, it’s not going to happen.”
Joining Gunn in the current squad are Hearts star Zander Clark and Motherwell keeper Liam Kelly.
