An Ocean Grove doctor who was sentenced to 14 years jail for sexually abusing patients is seeking to appeal his sentence.
A statement from the Supreme Court of Victoria confirmed Shaiful Milky has lodged an appeal against both his sentence and conviction.
Milky was found guilty by a jury of 15 charges of indecent assault, sexual assault and rape of his patients while he worked at the Ocean Grove Peninsula Family Medical Practice and with the National Home Doctor Service between September 2012 and February 2019.
Milky was sentenced to jail on April 29 this year by County Court Judge Felicity Hampel who said the charges were serious examples of serious sexual offences.
Throughout the trial Milky maintained his innocence and Judge Hampel said Milky clearly showed no evidence of remorse or acceptance of responsibility for his actions.
She said the victims had to relive and recount the events in court and had to deal with the embarrassment of having private details made public.
Milky, who was born in Bangladesh and has New Zealand citizenship, moved to the Geelong region in 2011 and will likely be deported upon completion of his sentence.
He will be eligible for parole after 11 years.
Last month it was revealed the number of women who had approached a law firm with allegations about Milky continued to climb as questions were raised about his past.
Jodie Harris, principal lawyer at Arnold Thomas and Becker’s Geelong office, said given the number of women who had come forward alleging sexual abuse by Milky in the Geelong region — 15 had approached the firm— while attending Peninsula Family Medical Practice and when using the National Home Doctor Service, the law firm had “genuine concerns” that he may have preyed on more women at other places he worked at.
