The transfer window is open which means we’ll no doubt see some huge transfer prices and that might even include a few club records being broken.
In the past few years clubs in the Premier League have tended to have more and more money to spend on transfers so each summer that means clubs break their own club record.
This summer Luton Town are the most likely club to reach new heights of spending, seeing as they’re playing in the league for the first time since its inception in 1992.
The Hatters should be careful with how they spend their hard earned dough though, because the league has shown a lot of warning signs over the years.
Quite often the most expensive of players don’t work the way anyone would expect, which admittedly also happens outside of England too.
But right now Luton actually have one of the best players in the league when it comes to each club’s most expensive transfer.
That comes in the form of forward Carlton Morris, who we rate as one of the two best record signings alongside Grealish, in our ranking from “Brilliant Value” to “Hand over the budget to someone else.”
Brilliant value: Jack Grealish – Manchester City, Carlton Morris – Luton Town.
Money well spent: Alexander Isak – Newcastle United, Morgan Gibbs-White – Nottingham Forest, Jefferson Lerma – Bournemouth, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa – Fulham.
Spent worse: Christian Benteke – Crystal Palace, Sebastien Haller – West Ham United, Emi Buendia – Aston Villa, Gylfi Sigurdsson – Everton.
Needs more time: Darwin Nunez – Liverpool, Enzo Fernandez – Chelsea, Matheus Nunes – Wolverhampton Wanderers, Kevin Schade – Brighton, Joao Pedro – Brighton & Hove Albion.
D: Paul Pogba – Manchester United, Nicolas Pepe – Arsenal, Tanguy Ndombele – Tottenham Hotspur, Rhian Brewster – Sheffield United, Wout Weghorst – Burnley.
Interestingly Morris is the cheapest player on the list having cost a reported £1.7 million from League One Barnsley before last season. He ended up with 20 goals and six assists as Rob Edwards’ side won the Championship play-offs.
Alexander Isak might be unlucky not to be in the top echelon but he will no doubt be there in a year’s time and Gibbs-White could too if he leads Forest to a third season in the top tier.
The third lot are a much of a muchness and even if Sebastien Haller didn’t work out at West Ham, other strikers have definitely flopped worse there.
Those who need more time include players who moved in January, after the campaign finished or Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez. He wasn’t the flop some thought but nor was he a complete success, we can review it in 52 weeks time.
How anyone thought that bottom group was worth spending a load of money on is anyone’s guess.
Manchester United might want to look into the mirror for some time for the answers as to how they let Paul Pogba leave for free, spend £89 million to bring him back, see him flop and then have him leave for nothing for a second time!
The fact that three of the worst five record signings are from the ‘big six’ tells you that money doesn’t buy you success, in fact often it just buys you problems!
