With summer now here, and the recent heatwave resulting in hundreds of Sussex residents flocking to the coast, the South Downs and, of course, beer gardens, have begun to get even more popular. Last month, we decided to give you the chance to vote for your best beer garden in the county and we were excited to reveal that the one with the most votes was the Eight Bells, a pub located in Jevington not far from Polegate.
As stunning as plenty of the nominee beer gardens were, this pub garden came out on top and we decided to venture to the pub to see if it really did deserve its new title of being the best beer garden in Sussex as decided by SussexLive readers. Having never been to the pub before, I was able to look at the establishment, its garden and its food with fresh eyes, and I was relatively pleased with the experience.
On arriving at the pub, I was greeted immediately by friendly staff who were more than happy to guide me to the pub garden, where the view instantly captured my attention. With field after field, a few ponies and horses, and plenty of greenery, the pub garden view really is a countryside dream, and matches the vibe of the country pub too.

Although it was a Thursday afternoon, the pub garden was relatively busy with couples and groups of friends all soaking up the sunshine. Taking a seat in the shade, I was brought a menu very swiftly and decided to opt for a nice cool orange juice.
Served promptly, I then cast my eyes away from the view – which was nothing short of beautiful – and scanned the menu to find a range of tasty options available. From fish and chips, to burgers and pies, it was the Chicken Schnitzel that I decided to go for, which came with plenty of greens, some potatoes and some melted cheese on top.
Within 20 minutes, I was served up my food which looked and tasted great, and was filling enough to justify the more expensive price. The food, combined with the view from the garden – and the pleasant appearance of the garden too – made the experience enjoyable enough to want to return, which is always a positive sign.
When it comes to the beer garden itself, and my view on whether it is the best in Sussex as our readers voted for, I agree that the views were pleasant and tranquil, however whether it was the best in my eyes is debatable. With Sussex having plenty of beer gardens overlooking rivers, beaches and alternative countryside views, I think to label this garden or any in the county as the best would be a challenge in my eyes, but it is definately high in my rankings for sure.
As well as having great views, the garden also had ample space with a number of benches to sit on, as well as high tables on a patio area. There was also a nice mix of sunshine and shade, which as the hot weather continues, is extremely important.
With the pub having its own car park, and a convenient bus stop right outside, there isn’t much not to like about the establishment. Whether you want a bite to eat or a drink or two in the sun, I would say this establishment is worth a visit.
