Luke Humphreys has been calling Elitloppet for years – since 2013 in fact – but this time it’ll be for real.
The 22-year-old will travel to Sweden on Thursday before broadcasting the great race for Sky Racing this Sunday.
“This will actually be my 10th call of the Elitlopp final,” Humphreys said with a laugh.
“Eight of them have been from my bedroom and one of them was on course in 2016.
“I’ve called every final except the 2020 one because of COVID – I don’t even think it was on Sky that year – so I’ve got experience of calling it, but this is the first time I’ll obviously do it properly.”
Humphreys is a well-known European racing devotee, with many late nights honing his craft off the television in his Gisborne home before landing a full-time role with Harness Racing Victoria when he was 18.
He quickly took over from Craig Rail as “the voice of Mildura” and achieved a major highlight in March last year when he called his first Group 1 race at Melton.
But despite all he has already accomplished, this latest opportunity is set to become the highlight of his career so far.
“If I ever get the opportunity to do a big harness race here in Australia, I’d probably get just as much if not more enjoyment out of doing Elitloppet to be honest,” Humphreys said.
“I just can’t wait to do it. Obviously with Just Believe, we will be going to some sort of audience because of the Australian interest.”
Humphreys will call the entire Sunday meeting from Solvalla for Sky Racing, with Just Believe’s heat scheduled for 11.28pm AEST and the final set down for 1.45am AEST.
