The girl was rushed to hospital in a serious condition after she was stabbed at school.
Dozens of people gathered around a memorial of flowers and stuffed animals in a park to honour mother and her child. Family members identified the victims of the stabbing outside an elementary school as Carolann Robillard, 35, and her child. Police said the woman and child were stabbed on May 5 outside Crawford Plains School in southeast Edmonton. They said officers responded and shot a man matching a description of the suspect after an altercation. The woman died at the scene and the child later died in hospital.
Police were called to Peace Lutheran College on Cowley St in the Cairns suburb of Kamerunga at 10.35am Tuesday, following reports an 18-year-old woman had been stabbed.
She was rushed from the school to Cairns Hospital in a serious condition.
An 18-year-old man has since been taken into custody.
It is believed the two people are known to each other, and there is no further threat to the public.
Investigations are continuing.
