According to Pets in Distress (PID) in Hazyview, the town has a huge task ahead of it to bring the feral cat population under control.
According to the organisation, lodges and hotels in the area are experiencing a high rate of kitten births, as are shopping centres.
The PID said it was in discussion and working with a lodge, which was also doing its best to keep the feral numbers under control.
“We then move on to the shopping centres and other lodges. We do not believe the Hazyview community realises just how many ferals there are roaming around our little town,” said the organisation.
“Inasmuch as ferals keep the rodent population under control, we as a community need to do the same where they are concerned.”
Having said that, the organisation made it clear that it does not harm the animals. The control measure is a sterilisation campaign in which cats are caught, sterilised and released to their original environment.
The PID thanked Lowveld Largemouth Series for assisting in getting its campaign off the ground by not only donating food for the strays on the street and for those who need assistance in feeding their pets, but also for donating R9 500 towards the campaign.
The cost is R550 per cat, which is paid for by the hotel, lodge or shopping centre. The organisations pays for the transport and catcher, which is why it hosts fundraisers.

An evening of entertainment with live music and bingo will be hosted at the Numbi Hotel on May 25 in support of the campaign. There are 12 tables that seat 10 persons at a cost of R250 each.
Two vehicles and professional guides have also been donated for a game drive into the Kruger National Park on May 28 from 05:30 to 15:30.
Funds generated from the drive will go towards the campaign. The cost is R890, plus conservation fees.
“Please reserve your seats, as there are only 20 available. Do not miss out on this special experience and the knowledge that you are part of a very necessary service.”
