The Burleigh Bears Hasting Deering Colts team will leave behind the sunny shores of the Gold Coast on Saturday and head to Ipswich, as they look to rack up back-to-back wins following a tough victory against the Clydesdales last week.
The last time the Bears played the Jets it was all Burleigh as they won 40-18 on the Coast.
Six rounds into this season and the Bears are in eighth spot on the ladder having won two from four games while the Jets are still yet to have a win.
The Bears started well last round with the first try in the third minute but they let the Clydesdales keep fighting and coming back.
Up 22-8 at halftime, the Bears should have put an end to the game but the momentum continued to shift backwards and forwards and the Clydesdales’ three second half tries got them close.
Two sin bins in the last five minutes didn’t help the Bears’ cause and they gave away too many penalties, which kept giving the Clydesdales a chance.
Bears coach Matt Foster found plenty of positives from the Clydesdales’ game but know Burleigh will have to sharpen up a few things ahead of their clash with the Jets.
“We started really well but we continue to not play the full game,” Foster said.
“It’s all about that consistent performance and focusing on the process, not the outcome.
“We led at halftime but then didn’t keep it going and put ourselves under pressure.
“If I could take anything away this week, it’d be a consistent performance against Ipswich.
“Ipswich look to be a hard-working, enthusiastic team so we need to combat them and then keep going.”
The Bears will look to their front row to settle everything down and take it forward this week.
“Xavier Stowers has been great and Kaden Somerville has been consistent,” Foster said.
Somerville made 163 metres against the Capras and will be looking to replicate that performance again this week.
Elsewhere in Round 6, the Souths Logan Magpies will take on the second-placed Redcliffe Dolphins.
The Mackay Cutters will look to end Brisbane Tigers’ undefeated streak.
The Central Queensland Capras will play host to the Norths Devils
And the competition-leading Tweed Seagulls will meet the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
Sunshine Coast Falcons, Northern Pride, Townsville Blackhawks and Western Clydesdales will all enjoy byes in Round 6.
