It may just be the world’s first handmade hotel room.
Deco Hotel Canberra and Handmade Canberra have come up with the idea to connect guests to individual artisan makers.
The room has decorative throws by Ashculme Textiles and by Leroy Mac Designs. Decorative cushions are from Bursaria Workshop. Artworks are from Eggpicnic, soaps are from Goat Farm, and the brittle for the in-room hamper is by Bendigo Brittle. Ceramic vases are by LouiseM studio and Red Fox Pottery, planters are made from recycled gas bottles by Lil Gas and room diffusers are by the Little Flame Co. There are photographs by local professional Glenn Martin, and bespoke lights by Upswitch.
Julie Nichols, founder and director of Handmade Canberra, which represents the designers and producers of Australia’s capital, says: “This is a truly immersive local artisan experience where guests can stay in a bespoke, hand-curated hotel room — a room full of 100 per cent Australian-made products crafted lovingly from local and regional designers and producers.
“And, even better, a room where the guests can go ahead and purchase anything they like out of the room that takes their fancy.”
Alison Jones, marketing manager of Deco Hotel’s parent company, Capital Hotel Group, adds that even the mini bar and in-room food hampers are stocked with Handmade produce.
“Almost all of the hotel room’s regular products have been removed and replaced with Handmade Market stallholder creations,” she says.
“We have worked with Handmade Canberra to curate artworks, decorative throws, cushions, kitchenware, ceramic vases, sculptures, dinnerware, soaps and shower steamers, room diffusers and sprays, food and snacks, and mini-bar beverages.
“Not only can guests stay in the room and enjoy Deco’s famed comfort and hospitality in centrally located Braddon, but they can actually buy all of the Handmade items within the room.”
