EGG HARBOR TWP. – The Lenape High School girls golf team placed third in the NJSIAA South Sectional Tournament May 9 at the McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links here.
Junior Angelina Tolentino led the way for the Indians with a winning round of three-over-par 75, finally winning a tournament that she has been so close to capturing the last two seasons.
“Angelina’s victory is well-deserved,” said Lenape coach Andre Lopez. “She lost by one stroke her freshman year on the final hole to a senior who committed to play Division 1 golf at Michigan State. And last year in the 40-plus MPH winds and cold, she finished second again, beaten by the weather and an unforgiving course. However, this year, Angelina was prepared. From the first day of the season, she carried herself with an unparalleled confidence. Like she knew this would be her year. She was going to achieve her goal of winning this South Section title; no one and nothing was going to get in her way. Angelina is the essence of the truth that ‘hard work pays off.’”
Tolentino led the Indians to a third-place team finish of 371 and a berth in the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions.
Senior captain Ryann Foley came in at 94, followed by freshman Nesa Shah (101), junior Sehyr Singh (101) and junior Jordan Broiles (114).
“I cannot emphasize how proud I am of these girls,” said Lopez. “They have been working so hard this season to reach and embrace their full potential. The past two weeks they have been clicking on all cylinders hitting their numbers with more consistency and confidence. While they each struggled a bit more than usual today, they were able to hold their rounds together and put up the necessary numbers to secure a third place finish and a trip back to the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions. After missing out on the trip to the ToC last year by one stroke, these girls were hungry. They made it their team goal to seek redemption, and they did it. And they did it in classic Lenape fashion—with class, sportsmanship, smiles, and a Lenape pride that runs deep. So very proud of these girls, and the rest of our team who work day in and day out to make this program a success.”
