A Gwynedd pub has decided to postpone its “major refurbishment” to stay open for the summer. The Newborough Arms in Bontnewydd was set to close for around a month during the busy summer season for the work to take place.
This will now be pushed back to September, the landlords have said, in order for the pub to make the most of its busiest season and the events that have been planned.
The pub is owned by Heineken who announced earlier this month that it will be investing over £3.6m into several of its Welsh pubs. The Newborough Arms is one of nine pubs earmarked for refurbishment under the plans.

The work will “breathe a new lease of life” into the pub, the brewer and pub operator said. It will see the beer garden and pergola to the front of the pub redecorated with a further full redecoration on the inside, including the dining and bar area.
Posting on the pub’s Facebook page, the landlords said: “With some things still ongoing with planning etc it is now agreed that the refurbishment of the pub will now take place around September so that we don’t miss out on the summer trade and events etc.
“So with so many people enquiring about bookings etc you can carry on with your advanced bookings and we will let everyone know the exact date of closing with the builders looking at around 3-4 weeks to complete the work (with the plans we have seen the pub will look great).
“The brewery have chosen this pub as one to be done after the last year and success we have had here since we took over and with a lot more to come. And that is a big credit to all the support we have had from all the customers old and new.”
