Police have issued a major update after bones were found in the backyard of a quiet country town property.
Two skeletons have been found in the ruins of Pompeii, 2000 years after Mt Vesuvius erupted. The human remains were likely two men in their 50s who died in an earthquake that accompanied the eruption – as wall fragments were found between their broken bones. These skeletons are two of the estimated 1,300 victims’ remains recovered over the past 200 years.
About 2.30pm on Friday, police were called to a property on Paris Creek Road in Strathalbyn after the bones were found in a backyard.
Forensic investigators attended to examine the scene, before a scene guard was established on Saturday morning.
Detectives and forensic investigators are continuing to search the area, with assistance from STAR Group officers, volunteers from the SES and local patrols.
SA Police said the bones, suspected of being human, have been sent off for forensic testing.
“This testing will take some time,” police said.
Anyone with information that might assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The historic town of Strathalbyn is about 55km southeast of the Adelaide CBD, with a population of around 6000 people.
