Romain Grosjean copped a very colourful spray from Aussie Will Power at the Road America IndyCar round in Wisconsin on the weekend.
Power declared Grosjean a “piece of crap”, then saying that the former F1 driver needed “a punch in the face”, whilst he also tore in Kiwi Scott Dixon following a big smash at Canada Corner in practice.
The Toowoomba born Indycar Aussie eventually finished the race in P13 after his Penske Chevrolet needed an extensive rebuild. Series leader Alex Palou took out the win to extend his championship lead.
Power also aimed his verbal spray at Dixon after the two collided in Practice when Dixon slowed to let Grosjean past and forced Power into the barrier at Canada Corner.
An incensed Power then approached Dixon on track, who just didn’t see Power coming from behind in the incident, and grabbed at him twice before flipping him the bird before jumping into the recovery vehicle.
The separate Grosjean incident with Power saw the Frenchman also force the two-time indycar champion off the road where he almost went dangerously into the right-side concrete barrier when he moved over abruptly to cut off Power’s pass.
The post practice interview saw Power launch a scathing attack not only Dixon and Grosjean, but also the Road America track itself for the rough off-track surfaces that cause the cars to bounce wildly.
“This track’s terrible when you go off, they do a terrible job here, they need to pick up their game. Anywhere you go off you almost break your back every time, done it a couple of times this weekend. They need a kick in the butt, for this place,” Power said about the track itself.
He then launched into six-time champion Scott Dixon following their practice incident, with the pair then resolving things in the medical car afterwards.
“Just pissed at what Dixon did this morning, it ruined our whole weekend…it was a terrible move all up,” Power said in an angry outburst.
Dixon said in an interview aftterward that, “I saw Grosjean in my mirror after i recovered, and I didnt even realise Power was there. Really sorry for him and his team…a mistake on my behalf, and I feel frustrated for wrecking our car and his car as well. We ended up getting in the medical car together and he was fine after that.
Power left it till last to take his verbal shot at Grosjean, who’s had a colourful year with the Trans-Tasman drivers after he and Scott McLaughlin have twice taken each other out over the course of the season.
“Disappointed with what happened…and Grosjean, he’s a piece of crap if you saw what he did in practice. He needs a punch in the face!”
The P13 finish leaves the defending champion in eighth place on 190 points, whilst Palou sits on 324, enjoying a 74 point overall lead over Marcus Ericsson.
The next IndyCar outing is on July 2 at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course.
