Good Intentions Wine Co has recently opened its new venue in Mount Gambier as a cellar door by day, wine bar by night. The unique space offers a wide selection of their own wines, as well as wines from other volcanic regions and esteemed producers worldwide.
With a vibrant atmosphere, delicious food options, and a touch of nostalgia, Good Intentions Wine Co provides a one-of-a-kind experience for both locals and tourists.
Situated in a former butcher shop, the space owned by Andrew Burchell and Louise Adams, has been creatively transformed while preserving elements of its past. Vintage items like the pink butcher’s saw and bench add character to the interior. The cool room has been converted into a walk-in cellar, displaying the extensive collection of wines.
The bar, designed by Melbourne interior designer Aaron McKenzie, adds a contemporary touch to the overall ambiance.
“Whether it be local produce, arts, or venues, we want our local community to experience not only what can be found in larger cities or overseas, but also the added uniqueness of its country setting and proximity to the produce and farming,” Andrew and Louise tell Glam Adelaide.
Mount Gambier holds a significant place in Andrew’s heart, as it’s his hometown and the perfect location for his winery and vineyards. The volcanic soils of Mount Gambier contribute to the unique flavours of their wines, expressing grit, acidity, salinity, and purity all at once.
Visitors can also enjoy drinks at the trendy wine bar, which transforms into a city-style hangout spot in the evenings. The bar serves house cocktails, local craft beers, and spirits from the Limestone Coast. To complement the drinks, they offer simple and delicious pizzas made with their hand-made Neapolitan-style dough. The eclectic music selection, ranging from underground hip-hop to soul and classic rock, sets the perfect mood for the vibrant atmosphere.
Good Intentions Wine Co is committed to experimentation and produces a diverse range of wines and ciders. With approximately 16 different varieties, they explore unique winemaking techniques such as skin contact and barrel ageing.
While they embrace experimentation, their estate-grown wines hold a special place. Standouts include their pinot noirs, chardonnays, and cabernet franc, with Andrew’s favourite being the ‘Volcanic Lakes Vineyard’ single vineyard chardonnay which is soon to be released. It’s grown on the volcanic soils at the base of Mount Gambier’s dormant crater.
Food is an integral part of the experience at Good Intentions Wine Co. The venue aims to showcase a diverse range of culinary delights alongside their wines. Guest chefs often collaborate to bring their unique flavours to the table, and neighbouring establishments like Badenochs deli and Scroll Queen bakery contribute to the culinary offerings during special events. Occasional food trucks also make appearances in front of the venue.
Since its opening in December 2022, Good Intentions Wine Co has gained a following of both tourists and locals.
“Our local community are starting to show interest and with more awareness we see the venue going from strength to strength. There is nothing like it in Mount Gambier, just like our wines,” Andrew and Louise tell Glam Adelaide.
With exciting collaborations in the pipeline and plans for their seaside cellar door and winery, “The Cantina” in Robe, the future looks promising for this dynamic wine establishment.
Wine lovers can also look forward to their upcoming festival in Robe over the October long weekend in 2023, where wine and music will take centre stage.
Good Intentions Wine Co’s new cellar door and wine bar in Mount Gambier offer a delightful blend of outstanding wines, delectable food, and a lively atmosphere.
