Jimmy Bowie and Ben Grahame, both aged 17, were assessed with critical injuries and died at the scene.
Both boys were behind the wheel of their respective cars, which were travelling in opposite directions in the lead-up to the crash.
Bowie, a senior at McAuley College in Beaudesert but hailing from Palen Creek, has been remembered as a “beautiful boy”.
“You will be forever missed, beautiful boy,” one friend wrote on their social media.
They said he was “loved dearly” and his death had caused heartache for everybody.
Another friend wrote that Bowie would be “in our hearts forever”.
A group of the teen’s friends also shared a message, saying he was “such a beautiful soul gone far too soon”.
“Your friendships and the love we all have for you will live on forever.
“Still can’t believe it’s real, I know we will all miss you every day.
“You made such an influence on my life and I will forever be grateful.”
A MyCause has been created for Bowie’s family.
“(Jimmy) was a best mate to so many, a close friend, a brother, and a son,” the fundraiser said.
“We will never forget the influence he had on all of us and the encouragement he had to all his friends and family to do our best in life and we will keep his memory and love for him on going in our heart and words.
“His contagious smile, laugh and optimistic energy will never leave us.”
Ben Grahame, from Ormeau, has also been identified as a victim of the crash.
7NEWS understands he was travelling from one parent’s home to the other’s when the crash occurred.
“Ben was a very much loved and treasured family member who was charismatic, funny, the life of the party and a big softy on the inside,” a family friend wrote in a GoFundMe campaign for the teen’s family.
“Ben is the baby of the family and Colleen’s only son.”
Grahame had just started an apprenticeship and has been remembered as a kind and smart young man.
Calls for safety
“(It’s) an absolute tragedy,” Assistant Commissioner Charysse Pond said when asked about the incident at the launch of Operation Auster.
“The death of two young people will have huge ramifications across the community.”
Operation Auster is a week-long road safety campaign run by Queensland Police.
It aims to reduce incidents of road trauma across Queensland’s southern region.
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the Birnam crash.
“I implore our community to drive to the conditions, to drive safely and drive so others survive,” Pond said.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has any information relating to it is urged to contact police.
