Second-year electrical trainee Maggi Zeck is encouraging Hunter residents to apply for Glencore’s 2024 apprenticeship program.
The mining giant, which operates nine sites in the region – Mangoola, Ravensworth, Mount Owen, Glendell, Liddell, Integra, Bulga, HVO and United Wambo, has kick-started a search for its latest batch of recruits.
It’s offering opportunities in electrical, auto electrical, diesel fitting, fitter welder, radio technician, boilermaker, mechanic, fitter turner and refrigeration trades.
And, Ms Zeck thoroughly recommends the program.
“My tradespeople are great,” the Ulan West Underground Coal Mine-based employee said.
“I’ve had a really fantastic experience working with them.
“I think I get to work with some of the best trades people in the country.
“Working underground with the crews is terrific, too.
“It’s something you really can’t fathom when you’re new.
“But, once you join in with the crews, it’s amazing.
“I haven’t experienced anything like that before.”
While the Ulan West operations lay within the Mid-Western Regional LGA, Glencore also boasts a strong Hunter connection and has supported the communities of Singleton, Muswellbrook, Broke, Bulga, Lemington, Wybong and Denman for more than a decade.
Now, the company hopes to entice further local school leavers, university graduates and people of all ages looking for a well-paid and rewarding career to its fold.
“What we do matters… and we are proud of the contribution our business makes to Australia,” head of corporate affairs Cassandra McCarthy said.
“Last year Glencore provided work for over 18,000 people and contributed $20 billion to the national economy.
“From today, our 11 operations across the Hunter and Mid-West NSW are accepting applications until 18 June.
“We’ve welcomed almost 800 people into the coal and minerals sector including 192 graduates, 403 apprentices and 188 trainees currently working across our network.
“Our programs allow them to build exciting careers guided by some of the best in the business, all while earning a very good wage.
“The in-house initiative also rotates apprentices across multiple operations and is tied to a direct career path within the Glencore business.”
