Glass-bottom boat tours are now back for Whyalla’s annual Giant Cuttlefish season • Glam Adelaide

Cuttlefish breeding season is fast approaching and as any true South Australian will know, it’s a time of great excitement.

Each year, tens of thousands of the sea creatures migrate through our waters for the sole purpose of reproduction creating a magical underwater display in the process. Male cuttlefish are able to change their colour, shape and texture in a bid to impress a prospective mate which luckily for us, makes amazing viewing.

As the largest mass gathering of Giant Cuttlefish anywhere in the world, the annual natural wonder has captivated people around the globe with even the legend himself, Sir David Attenborough, coming to the shores of the Eyre Peninsula to marvel at the phenomenon which was filmed for his Blue Planet documentary.

It’s South Australia’s psychedelic secret. And it just got easier to see, as the highly popular glass boat tours return.

Leaving from Point Lowly, 25 minutes outside of Whyalla, you’ll be whisked away by your friendly captain who will not only take you directly to the scene of the action but also share their wealth of knowledge on the Cuttlefish and the seas of the Eyre Peninsula. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of some other friendly marine creatures.

Owner Matt Waller says that Cutty’s is an experience that caters to everyone.

“A family can come here and some can choose to snorkel with the cuttlefish but for those who don’t want to brave the freezing water, they can jump on the boat with us, take a seat and we’ll deal with the rest.”

“It’s an adventure you’ll never forget and a spectacle you never expected to love so much. Cuttlefish are pretty unassuming but amazing creatures. If you’re heading through Whyalla this winter, come say hi.”

And you must be wondering… why Whyalla? Well, the waters around Point Lowly & Stony Point have rocky seabeds which provide the perfect environment for females to lay and delicately attach their eggs.

Tours depart up to six times giving you flexibility on fitting one into your schedule and will run rain, hail or shine so make sure you take some warm clothing along with you.
