Gavin Bazunu could be set for a big move to Tottenham Hotspur pending the departure of Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris this summer.
Bazunu made the switch from Manchester City to Southampton just last summer and was installed as the Saints’ number one stopper for the majority of the season.
And while the south coast side have officially been relegated from the Premier League and now face the prospect of Championship football next season, that is a reality that may not greet Bazunu as interest in him remains from clubs in the top division.
Chief among them are Spurs, who look set to lose 36-year-old captain Hugo Lloris this summer.
After 11 years with Tottenham, the Frenchman finally looks set to move on from the club with reports of a move to Saudi Arabia gathering momentum over the weekend.
The Times reported that Lloris had received an eye-watering offer of £300,000 a week to play his football in Saudi Arabia next campaign.
The former Lyon goalkeeper is said to be waiting to see who Spurs bring in as Antonio Conte’s permanent replacement as manager before making a decision on his future.
Spurs were reported to have been interested in Bazunu’s Republic of Ireland teammate Caoimhin Kelleher, with the bit-part Liverpool number two also likely to move on in the summer window.
But now they are looking towards the ex-Portsmouth stopper, with a price tag of £15m reportedly floated – just £3m more than Saints paid Manchester City for his services one year ago.
In all, Bazunu has made 37 appearances for Southampton – with manager Ruben Selles opting to start veteran goalkeeper Alex McCarthy in his place in recent weeks.
Spurs have been without Lloris since he suffered a knee injury in February’s 1-0 win against Manchester City.
Former Southampton ‘keeper Fraser Forster has been starting in his place ever since.
However, it is not believed that the London club see the 35-year-old Englishman as a permanent fixture in the No.1 jersey.
