A Stoke-on-Trent art gallery is celebrating a large scale refurbishment with a new exhibition featuring paintings of Burslem – many of which are available to buy.
Barewall, in Burslem’s Market Place, has been shut for three months to allow renovation work to take place, which has the space ‘stripped right back’ to create a more airy environment. It’s reopening tomorrow (Saturday, May 20) with a gala day where visitors can enjoy the artworks with a glass of prosecco between 10am and 4pm.
The Burslem in Paint exhibition, which will run until Wednesday, May 31, features original work and prints by favourites including artists Geoffrey Wynne, Rob Pointon, Ian Mood, Ronnie Cruwys, Anne Courtine, Anthony Forster, Philip Hardaker, Paine Proffitt, Peter Davis, Jane Pellington and Rachel Grant.

The mix of 20th century and contemporary paintings all depict scenes in the Mother Town and include views of the Wedgwood Institute and Brickhouse Street and more. A large charcoal drawing of the town hall, which was produced by artist Rob Pointon for the former Denry’s Restaurant in St John’s Square, will also be unveiled as part of the exhibition.
The opening event will also introduce bespoke textiles, furnishings and found furniture business Lost and Found Projects, who are based in Barewall’s studio space. The gala day will be officially opened by Burslem councillor Jane Ashworth, now the leader of the council, at 12pm.
Amanda Bromley, of Barewall, said she hoped the relaunch and exhibition would be the start of ‘another new beginning’ for Burslem.
She said: “We have stripped the gallery right back and removed the ceiling, flooring and partitions to create a light and airy space. We are working towards being more sustainable for the good of the planet and have reused the flooring.
“I thought there could be nothing better to relaunch the gallery than a show of artwork featuring Burslem. Over the years it has been painted and drawn by some of the best artists in the city, many of whom now have a national profile.
“There are some iconic scenes for the city in Burslem and it shows how paint-able the town is. Everyone is welcome to come and have a look and maybe take something home with them.
“I hope this will be the start of another new beginning for Burslem.”
* Barewall, in Market Place, Burslem, is open Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 4pm, and Saturday 10am to 4pm.
