And don’t forget the limoncello-flavored baked goods, either
You can celebrate Mother’s Day by buying mom some flowers. Or taking her to a nice restaurant. Or even letting her enjoy the day doing…nothing.
But we think many moms also appreciate a good bottle — of wine, spirits, what have you. So this Weekend Sip is devoted to boozy gift suggestions that seem especially mom-friendly for a variety of reasons. Here are our picks…
A gin for mom
Woody Creek Distillers is a Colorado-based company known especially for its vodka, made from locally harvested potatoes. It also produces award-winning whiskey, as in bourbon and rye. But the company’s newest offering is Mary’s Select Gin ($34.99) — and it’s a sip inspired by Mary Scanlan, the company’s co-founder and a mother of two herself. Scanlan said she wanted her team to fashion a gin with a feminine feel and non-traditional flavor (aside from the requisite juniper, the botanicals include rhubarb, yuzu and butterfly pea flower blossoms). And there’s the gin’s striking purple-ish color — Scanlan’s favorite shade — courtesy of the butterfly pea flower.
A whiskey for mom
Kentucky-based Blue Run Spirits is all about honoring its state’s whiskey-making traditions. Its whiskey director is Shaylyn Gammon, a female “powerhouse” in the bourbon and rye world who’s a mom as well. The brand’s latest offering — Blue Run Kentucky Straight Emerald Single Barrel Rye ($199.99) — put the spotlight on moms in a distinct way. There are several barrel releases in the series and each barrel is named after a mother in the lives of the label’s founders. So you can sip a “Sharon” rye or a “Cheryl” rye or a “Janis” one (there are 10 barrel releases in all). Gammon says each barrel has its own unique personality, just like moms themselves.
A wine for mom
In this case, it’s a wine that honors a special mom: Carol Waldorf Lohr, who was the late wife of Jerry Lohr, founder of J. Lohr, the acclaimed California winery with vineyards in Monterey, Paso Robles and Napa Valley. The J. Lohr’s Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($60), sourced from Napa, is the Lohr family’s way of recognizing a woman and mom they have described as showing “kindness, generosity, and care for others.” Carol Lohr passed away in 2008 from complications related to breast cancer and portions of the sale of this bottle go to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
A limoncello for mom
Make that limoncello in many forms. The Italian liqueur is naturally known (and beloved) for its distinct lemony favor — and it’s a sip that can be easily appreciated by moms or just about anyone. Fabrizia Spirits is a New Hampshire-based company that makes delicious limoncello ($19.99) using Sicilian-sourced lemons. But it has expanded its offerings to include limoncello-flavored (but non-alcoholic) sweet treats, from biscotti to truffles, via its Fabrizia Lemon Baking Company. For Mother’s Day, Fabrizia’s bakery has a sampler “LiMOMcello” box ($44.99) that includes a variety of goodies.
