In the lead up to the NBA finals, The Star Sydney are teaming up with Hennessy and local hip hop collective The Area Movement and taking over one of Sydney’s biggest sports venues to host a series of Free Throw Rap Battle events.
From 10pm every Saturday from May 20 to 3 June 3, up-and-coming Sydney rappers will compete for the title of Sydney’s newest rap sensation. Artists will each have five minutes to showcase their skills, with two freestylers from each night progressing to the final showdown on Saturday, 10th June.
The winner of the final showdown will take away $1000 of studio time at Dream Factory Studio, including limousine transfers to and from the studio, a $1000 Star gift card and a Hennessy prize pack.
Alongside the newcomers, each night will feature some of The Area Movement’s best artists, including Klasik, Solly, Talisha and Shamaya. The final round will also see performances from TikTok DJ Mistah Cee, along with other special guests.
According to Lionel Nogueiro, label manager at The Area Movement, events where up-and-coming artists can showcase their work “are few and far between”, with The Star stating that the rap battle “could be a huge steppingstone for the winning artist to take their career to the next level.”
Nogueiro explained that The Area Movement are excited to be partnering with Hennessy and The Star to provide “a platform for these amateur rappers to take the stage right next to some of our favourite existing local acts.”
“The vibes at Sports Bar on Saturday nights will be unmatched so don’t miss out on the ultimate hip-hop experience!”
