Young farmers from Forss have found the winning recipe in a north country cooking contest.
The team from Forss Young Farmers Club B, Rhianna Mackay and Abby Mill, served up variety of dishes which caught the judge’s eye.
The pair came first in the Highland elimination round of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC) North Region ‘Ready Steady Country Cooks’ competition on Sunday.
The Highland competition was held at Stromness Academy with nine teams from the area competing. Teams were given one hour to cook dishes using a bag of mystery ingredients, donated by E Flett Butchers, Stromness.
Within the list of ingredients was quality Scotch steak mince, apples and pasta. Without the aid of recipe books, the teams had to create their very own dishes in a ‘Ready Steady Cook’ style competition.
Teams were judged on all aspects of their cookery skills, including hygiene, technical skill and team work as well as the balance, taste and appearance of the dishes prepared.
In second place in the Highland contest were Rachel Isbister and Jessica Rendall, from Sandwick Young Farmers, and in third place was East Mainland, Alix Harvey and Grace Harcus. Also competing were tams from Bower, Halkirk and Harray.
A Grampian elimination round, held at Garioch Community Kitchen, Inverurie, saw eight teams from the area competing.
Again, teams were given a surprise bag of ingredients, this time using chicken.
Winners Ellen Glennie and Sally Glennie, from Vale of Alford JAC, proved the winning cooks on the day with their three-course meal they rustled up for the judges.
In second place was Eilidh Davidson and Kirsten Craig of Strichen JAC team. Also competing was Mid Deeside, Garioch and Turriff.
