Spy photos of Ford’s Mustang GT3 ‘race car for the road’ have shown off a wild Porsche 911-style centre-exit exhaust and new aerodynamic bodywork.
The high-performance, race-car inspired variant of the new Ford Mustang has been photographed while testing on public roads in the US – with bold aerodynamic parts and a centre-exit exhaust.
Images posted to the Mustang7G forum by user ‘Jarstang’ have shown a lightly camouflaged seventh-generation Mustang driving through suburban streets in Michigan – likely near Ford’s global headquarters in Dearborn.
According to the forum user, a well-informed source has confirmed the car in question is a road-going version of the Mustang GT3 – teased by Ford CEO Jim Farley in March this year.
While the muscle car’s grille and lower bumper are hidden behind camouflage, it’s expected the air intakes will be larger than the standard Mustang – allowing the V8 engine to draw in more cool air, despite remaining naturally aspirated.
The biggest change compared to the upcoming Mustang’s GT and Dark Horse variants is at the rear, with Ford’s engineers hiding a revised boot lid and spoiler under camouflage – but failing to totally disguise a unique, centre-exit exhaust.
A rectangular-shaped box of mesh between where the Mustang’s exhaust tips would normally be located brings attention to the new outlets behind it, giving the muscle car a Porsche 911-esque appearance.
As previously reported, the yet-to-be-revealed Ford Mustang GT3 will also be eligible for the Bathurst 12 Hour endurance race in 2025, with the car-maker previously announcing its intention to race in the popular event.
Further details about the Ford Mustang GT3 – and its road-going counterpart – are expected to be revealed throughout the year, ahead of the race car’s competition debut in 2024.
The 2024 Ford Mustang range – excluding the GT3-based road car – is due to arrive in Australia between July and September 2023, pending any delays.
