BirdLife Capricornia is supporting a screening of the film ‘Flyways’ at both Gladstone and Yeppoon following the journey of our shorebirds.
Birdlife Secretary Allan Briggs said the film tells an amazing story about the shorebirds that fly from the Arctic to Australia and back again every year.
“These shorebirds visit the coast, islands and wetlands of Capricornia each year and many of them are listed as threatened species,” Mr Briggs said.
“The film is a must see for the Capricornia community not only as a brilliant piece of film making but also to educate the community about the 24,000 km round trip these shorebirds make each year.”
The latest film from Director Randall Wood, Flyways, opens on a spectacular sunrise in Moreton Bay.
The journey begins to capture, tag, release and follow the largest migratory shorebird in the world – the Eastern Curlew; which is notoriously hard to pin down, and devastatingly running short on numbers.
The Curlew, like the other migratory shore birds followed in the film, are at risk of a number of man-made factors, such as climate change, and coastal development.
The Eastern Curlew can fly for five days without landing, and travels 13,000 km from Australia to North Asia.
The Red Knot has a range of 9,000km and has won many hearts with it’s beautiful red plume.
The Hudsonian Godwit can fly for 7 days without stopping.
The film takes you to Australia, Africa, China, Chile, Alaska and Siberia, and together you will learn the secrets of their migration.
The film will screen in Gladstone on Saturday 3 June and at Yeppoon on Sunday 4 June .
