ESCANABA — The Escanaba Elks Lodge #354, along with the Escanaba City Band, have announced plans for the annual Flag Day program at the Karas Memorial Band Shell Wednesday, June 14 in Ludington Park.
The program begins at 7 p.m., with patriotic musical selections by the city band, directed by Bruce Cassell, followed at 7:30 p.m. with the Elks Flag Day Ceremony.
Of special interest will be an appearance by the Remnants Barbershop Chorus under the direction of Ed Boehm. The group will sing patriotic numbers as part of the program.
The program will be performed by the Officers of the Elks, led by Exalted Ruler Steve Victorson. The “History of the Flag” will be presented by Ava Gylock, daughter of Lodge Treasurer Jennie Gylock and the “Response” presented by Elk member Mark Ammel.
Scoutmaster Craig Woerpel and Boy Scouts of America Troop 411 of Escanaba will assist with the “History of the Flag”. Free handouts, including miniature United States flags, will be distributed to the public.
Old, damaged and worn flags ready for retirement can be brought to the ceremony or deposited in the blue barrel marked for retired flags located behind the Elks Lodge at 510 Ludington Street.

American Legion Post 71 of Gladstone will also be hosting a flag retirement ceremony for flags that are worn and torn at the Veterans Memorial Park in Gladstone on Wednesday, June 14 at 7 p.m.
The park is located behind the car wash. The public is welcome to attend.
