FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team earned four first-team All-ASUN honors – led by Player of the Year Edrick Felix (Orlando, Fla./Victory Charter HS/College of Central Florida) – for the first time in program history, the league announced Monday.
Felix, graduate outfielder Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS), graduate infielder Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) and graduate infielder Joe Kinker (North Port, Fla./Venice HS) earned ASUN First Team honors. For Ellis and Kinker, it marks their third straight All-ASUN honor. Figueredo earned All-ASUN honors for a second straight year. Figueredo and Ellis also landed on the ASUN All-Academic Team.
Sophomore outfielder Harrison Povey (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla./Largo HS) landed on the All-ASUN Second Team. Junior infielder/pitcher Jacob Lojewski (West Palm Beach, Fla./Delray American Heritage HS), senior pitcher LJ McDonough (Blanchard, Okla./Blanchard HS/Wichita State), senior catcher/infielder Alejandro Rodriguez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Montverde Academy/Eastern Florida State) and senior pitcher/outfielder Stephen Wilmer (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS/Pasco-Hernando State/ECU) earned All-ASUN Third Team honors.
Felix is the Green & Blue’s fourth ASUN Player of the Year (Jason Peacock, 2008; Jake Noll, 2016; Nick Rivera, 2017), and coach Dave Tollett has now landed 57 Eagles onto All-ASUN teams.
FGCU (38-17 overall, 20-10) earned the most All-ASUN honors in 2023. Regular season champion Lipscomb earned eight, Jacksonville State earned seven, North Florida and Stetson earned five, Jacksonville, Liberty and North Florida earned four, Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay earned three, Kennesaw State earned two, and North Alabama and Queens (N.C.) earned one. Bellarmine did not place a player among the 2023 awards.
Logan Thomason from Eastern Kentucky was named the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year. Lipscomb’s Logan Van Treeck was named ASUN Pitcher of the Year. Evan Chrest of Jacksonville earned ASUN Freshman of the Year honors. Lipscomb’s Jeff Forehand was named ASUN Coach of the Year.
FGCU earned the second seed in this week’s 2023 ASUN Baseball Championship Tournament, and begins play against fourth-seeded Jacksonville at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Melching Field at Conrad Park in DeLand, Fla.
Felix was a major reason the Eagles owned arguably the most powerful offense in college baseball this season. The sophomore belted an FGCU single-season record 23 home runs to go with 22 doubles and 73 RBIs. Felix’s 178 total bases in 2023 rank first in school history and are second nationally, and his homers rank sixth in the country.
“Edrick has been such a great addition to our club, not only as a player but the person he is,” Tollett said. “His numbers speak for themselves, and they speak loudly. The Player of the Year award is so special in this league with the talent we have in our conference. We as a team are so happy for him.”
Ellis, an All-ASUN Second Team choice in 2022 and an All-ASUN First Team selection in 2021, broke one of the more enduring records in college baseball this season. The only captain in Tollett’s 21-year coaching career, Ellis reached base safely – earning a hit, walk or being hit by a pitch – in 117 consecutive games. That broke the 101-game mark held by Texas’ Mark Payton from 2012-13. Ellis is threatening the FGCU all-time on-base percentage record (.493, Chris Brown, 2003-04), and already owns the school’s hit-by-pitch record (59).
“There is just one word – captain,” Tollett said. “He is the only one I have had in my coaching career. The 117-game streak speaks to who he is and his team-first approach, and it’s a record that will stand for a while. He is that player that makes such an impact on your team – from leadership to culture – that he does better than anyone.”
Figueredo didn’t disappoint after being named an ASUN Preseason Player of the Year leading into the 2023 season – hitting .353 with 19 homers 10 doubles and 62 RBIs. Figueredo, who was an All-ASUN First Team choice in 2022, has hit 37 career home runs, 37 doubles, and piled up 150 RBIs to go with a .344 batting average.
“Alejandro is of the most complete hitters in FGCU history,” Tollett said. “He has a passion to hit, and is such a student of the game. Figgy makes adjustments as good or better than any player I have coached. He is a true champion.”
Kinker is the best slugger in FGCU history, overtaking Nick Rivera’s former school-record home run mark of 47 earlier this season and has 59 homers heading into the ASUN Championship. Kinker was an All-ASUN First Team choice last season, made the All-ASUN Second Team in 2021 and was an ASUN All-Freshman choice in 2019. With 170 career walks, he is nine behind the school record held by Nick Rivera (179, 2013-17), and is hitting .373 with 16 doubles, 17 homers and 73 RBIs this season.
“Joe has had an awesome career at FGCU,” Tollett said. “He is our all-time home run leader, but this year Joe has become a great hitter and leader for us. His team approach is one of the reasons we are in the top 10 in about every offensive category.”
Povey hit .309 this season with 20 doubles, two triples, 16 homers and 53 RBIs. Lojewski hit .292 this season with 14 doubles, 18 homers and 57 RBIs. McDonough went 5-2 with a 3.08 ERA and a team-high six saves – striking out 54 hitters against 21 walks. Rodriguez hit .332 with 12 homers, two triples, seven homers and 49 RBIs. Wilmer hit .315 with seven doubles, two triples, 14 homers and 48 RBIs.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 98 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 15-plus seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just 11-plus seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 49 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. In 2022, the men’s golf team became the first program to earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Nine FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women’s basketball (No. 20 in 2021-22 and No. 22 in 2022-23), baseball (No. 15 in 2023), beach volleyball (No. 20 in 2022), and both men’s soccer (2018, 2019) and women’s soccer (2018) as five of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green & Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors’ Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.57 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2022 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 27 consecutive semesters. The past seven semesters (Fall 2019-Fall 2022) saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher cumulative team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
