Hundreds have been evacuated from a huge Midlands convention on Sunday. A fire at EM-Con has seen hundreds evacuated from an arena in Nottingham.
The convention was evacuated as emergency services rushed to the scene. The fire broke out at the Motorpoint Arena during this weekend’s event, branded “The East Midlands biggest popular culture event”.
EM-Con organisers said: “Fire alarm evacuate. Well done in doing it in a safe and timely manner. Thank you the arena staff in dealing with this in prompt fashion. We will update as soon as we have information.”

In an update published just 30 minutes later, at 2.20pm, the organisers confirmed everyone was safe. They tweeted: “Everyone is safe, thank you for your understanding and prompt action on leaving the building you made it very easy for @nottinghamarena staff and EM-Con crew.
“Let’s get back to enjoying our #popculture #comiccon passion.” Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed hat two fire engines from the London Road fire station were called to the Nottingham Arena just before 1.45pm.
When they arrived, they discovered a small electrical fire which was quickly put out with the help of electricians. The weekend event describes itself as “the best in sci-fi television, comic and book talent”. “Pop on your best ghost-busting boiler suit and get practising your best dalek voice to impress your favourite characters from Dr Who, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones,” its website says.
Guests for 2023 include Harry Potter star David Bradley and BBC Doctor Who actor Arthur Darville. Mandip Gill, Devon Murray and Lord of the Rings star John Rhys Davies are attending, as well as James Cosmo and Guy Henry. Other guests include Strictly Come Dancing star Will Mellor, Colin Baker, Mat Horne and Danny John-Jules, alongside Celebrity Gogglebox favourite Bez, the former Happy Mondays star.
