Removal of lead contaminated soil that’s held up the completion of the Longmeadow Parkway Bridge Corridor is finally underway.
According to a Kane County Department of Transportation news release, the project started last week and will take 12 months to complete, weather and work production schedules permitting.
Work hours will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and daily temporary lane closures will be required. Flaggers or cones may be needed to control traffic as construction vehicles enter and leave the work zone, the release said.

Elgin Community College’s summer Kids’ College returns in June with returning classes and several new offerings.
Firefighting, phone photography, videography and various styles of dance are among the new programs, a news release said. Returning favorites include coding, drawing, STEAM exploration, photography and music.

Otter Creek Elementary School music teacher Morgan Lentino is one of 212 quarterfinalists for the 2024 Grammy Music Educator Award.
The award recognizes educators from kindergarten through college level for their outstanding work. Seminfinalists will be announced in September, and the winner will be invited to and recognized during Grammy week in 2024.

Elgin Township is collecting cat and dog food for the pets of senior residents 65 and older.
Contributions of dry (5 pounds or less) and canned cat food are needed so they don’t have to have to turn anyone away due to lack of supply, officials said in a Facebook post.
Unopened bags and cans of pet food can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the township office, 729 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin.

Elgin Community will be holding three ceremonies this weekend to recognize the spring class of 2023.
Graduates Cristina Bahena Benitez of Hanover Park and Sheronda Murray-Jamison of East Dundee will speak at a ceremony honoring graduates of the State of Illinois High School Diploma program, which is being held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 19.
The ceremony for those who have completed career and technical programs will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, and will feature student speaker Kira Spears of Algonquin. An honorary associate in science degree will be awarded to Candace McCreary, a former member of the ECC Board of Trustees.
The university transfer ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday and will feature student speakers Chioma Echefu of Carpentersville and Paulina Sequeda Malave of West Dundee. An honorary associate in arts degree will be awarded to John Duffy, emeritus and former ECC trustee.

The Kane County Forest Preserve District will be holding monthly yarn art programs where crafters can gather together, share ideas and work on projects.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own knit, crochet or other yarn art project to work on during the programs, which are held at Creek Bend Nature Center in St. Charles.
The series is open to yarn crafters of all skill levels and ages. Children under 18 years old need to be accompanied by an adult.
Participants can register for one class, or the entire year. All classes run from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and are free.
