LOW MOOR, VA – Early run support propelled the Alleghany Mountaineers to a 9-4 senior night victory over the Glenvar Highlanders Tuesday evening in a Three Rivers District baseball game in Low Moor.
The Mounties scored all nine of their runs through the first three innings. It was a collective effort from the team in producing run support. Six Mounties accounted for RBIs in the win. Hunter DePriest and Kole Caldwell led the team with a pair of runs batted in. Eight of the nine starters in the lineup had hits.
In the first inning, senior standout Garrett Via jump-started the offense with an RBI double to right field. Fellow senior Wyatt Griffith followed with an RBI single to push the Mounties lead to 2-0. Two batters later, DePriest crushed a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run.
Following their four-run first inning, the Mounties added three more in the second inning behind RBIs from Conner McPeek and Eli Weese who had scored on a wild pitch.
Already holding a six-run advantage, the Mounties offense was hungry for more and pushed three more runs across the plate in the third inning. This time around it was Caldwell who ripped a two-run double on a line drive into right field. Halen Lowman followed suit with a sacrifice fly that brought in the teams ninth run.
The nine-run advantage was more than enough for Lowman, who took the mound Tuesday evening. The senior lefty pitched well in his 5.2 innings as he allowed two runs on six hits, walked one, and struck out three. The win was Lowman’s seventh on the year as he remained unbeaten his seven outings.
With few outs left to use and trailing by a wide margin, Glenvar did manage to put four runs on the scoreboard across the final three innings. Adam Franklin led all batters with a three-hit performance and drove in a pair. Dawson Anderson had two hits in three at bats. Anderson also suffered the loss after allowing nine runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.
The Mounties who improved to 16-0 overall and 9-0 in the district have two games left to go for an undefeated regular season. The team will play their final regular season home game on Thursday when they host non-district opponent Rockbridge County who plays in the Valley District. Then on Friday the teams regular season concludes on the road against Radford.
